February Update
Posted By The Drydens on February 25, 2012
These “monthly” updates have slowly transformed themselves into “quarterly-ish” updates! Hopefully we will be able to write more frequently in the upcoming months. In January, Dave was able to meet with a lot of leaders and ministers. He was invited to share our vision and methods with a handful of leaders in a church near our village. The meeting went well and as a result Dave was invited to preach about evangelism and our approach to that church and share in a more intimate setting with small groups in a neighboring region. Dave has also been invited to share with new believers at a meeting in the end of March.
Recently we have had a shift in relationships that are opening for us new paths forward in ministry.
These changes were expected, not bad and give us some options in deciding what to focus on and how best to distribute our energy. One principle that we have always valued is equipping nationals to become effective in their own locale. We will eventually leave Ukraine, but locals will always remain here. Long after we leave they will continue to minister and share Jesus with their neighbors and community. Up to this point we have been working in the trenches doing first-hand relational evangelism ourselves. This was for two main reasons. First, because relational evangelism is a natural part of who we are anyway. Secondly, there were no locals interested in doing what it (or they were unable to see the need). Since they have seen through our own actions what we were talking about, we now have more credibility. To sum it up, God gave us the opportunity to teach by example. First came the doing, now will coming the teaching. And so, now we are being invited to teach, share, and encourage local believers to think through their approach to evangelism, recognize their responsibility, appreciate their identity in Christ and the need for their participation in bringing truth to their friends and community in a real, effective and practical way. We have been encouraged and discouraged through this recent journey, but we look forward with anticipation for the results that may come from our willingness to share.
Personally, life has not been boring! I (Dave) am taking a college class, Annette started working on a quilt, we’re both are teaching David (and Lily of course) by homeschooling. Our schedule here can be unpredictable, so that doesn’t always make life fun (some days are very long, and they all seem to happen in a row!). We also had significant snow and cold temps. January 31 we had 2-3 feet of snow (in a village where we’re lucky to get 6 inches a year) and had air temps of -30C (-22F). Thank God our water didn’t freeze, our heat worked well and we only got stuck twice on the road. If not for the help of a tractor we would have never made it home that night! Long story short–a trip that should take 6 minutes took 3 hours. Good times, incredible memories, stiff muscles.

will now be arriving in the US on July 15th. Please be in prayer for us at this time. Pray for our baby’s health, for getting packed up and ready to go, and for saying goodbye. Pray for our health (it would certainly be great to travel without any of us being sick!) and for safety in travel. Also pray for David and Lily during this transition time.

ability to meet with them outside of the planned meeting time (but maybe there is a reason for that), but they have met without us once (there were other evangelists who traveled to meet them). Pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to work in the hearts of the people who gather with us. Pray for the Christians who have decided to take part in first-hand evangelism. Pray that God would strengthen all of us so that we can bring Him glory.
